Strange Ironic Human

Strange ironic human

This blog is a labour of love, and it will always be free. Thousands of people read every post which is incredible. And if just 100 people donate €2 it means that I’ll be able to continue doing all of this for another year. So if you like the work, it would mean the world to me if you considered making a donation. Thank you to everyone who already has this year. There’s no expectations, as ever, and I hope you have a lovely week. Donate here

There is also now a Thoughts Too Loud Podcast!

Change is humbling.

Change can so often feel like going backwards. Your life was one way for so long, and now it is so different. And it feels familiar, which is why it feels like the opposite of progress. But maybe it is isn’t. Because while the circumstances may feel like a life you lead before, the reality is, you are different now. You are different, and so this life that feels familiar is different inherently. And you can think like this and try to feel better about things. But there’s also truth in how facts rarely affect how we feel.

Change makes us uncomfortable.

It always does, but we always adapt. It’s what we do. We’re versatile like that. We can figure out a way through it, nearly always. And eventually, what once felt uncomfortable feels like home. So much so that, if it were all to change again, we would feel uncomfortable again. And so on, and so on.

And you may grieve the life you lost. Or, even more than that, grieve what that life could have become. An entire future disappears because we lose a job, or a relationship ends, or tragedy comes out of nowhere of a Tuesday and throws life in a spin. It happens to all of us. I think there’s comfort in that. I think we should always remind ourselves that no experience is unique. There are others around us who have been through this. I think that’s what community is in a lot of ways. People who understand what we’re going through. If only we could see this, lean on each other, and endure together. But sadly, so often, we try to endure alone.

I don’t know. These are just thoughts. It feels strange, ironic, human to be so uncomfortable with something that is inevitable. But that’s how we go. And we always adapt. One day, suddenly, nothing is as bad as it once seemed. I think that’s worth remembering when we’re going through it.
