One Piece of Advice

This blog is a labour of love, and it will always be free. Over 1,000 people read every post which is incredible. And if just 100 people donate €2 it means that I’ll be able to continue doing all of this for another year. So if you like the work, it would mean the world to me if you considered making a donation. Thank you to everyone who already has this year. There’s no expectations, as ever, and I hope you have a lovely week. Donate here
There is also now a Thoughts Too Loud Podcast!
I was filming something with UCC last week and one of the questions they asked was ‘what one piece of advice would you give your younger self?’
This is a question I’m asked quite a lot, and while it’s common it’s hard to answer. Because I really enjoy my life now. But I didn’t always. But also – if I hadn’t gone through the life I’ve lived would my life be the way it is now? It’s hard to say.
So my natural response to this question is to say: keep doing what you’re doing. Keep being yourself, keep learning about yourself, keep following your own path. Because what else is there? Maybe I should tell my younger self to never ever wear a pair of skinny jeans, or to starting drinking coffee sooner. Or be sounder to your mother, be more present with your father.
Truly, I would say that you should go to therapy sooner than you did. Fair play for eer going at all, but talking to someone two years before you did would have saved you a lot of hassle. But then again, you wouldn’t become who you are without all those experiences.
I don’t know. It’s interesting to think about. Like, what advice would actually be useful? Buy Bitcoin now? Zoom is gonna replace Skype, invest? Who knows. I would have ignored it anyway, most likely.
*Apologies that I’m a day late, I just moved to Dublin and am only coming up for air now.
