Maybe Things Do Work Out in the End

book cover

This blog is a labour of love, and it will always be free. Thousands of people read every post which is incredible. And if just 100 people donate €2 it means that I’ll be able to continue doing all of this for another year. So if you like the work, it would mean the world to me if you considered making a donation. Thank you to everyone who already has this year. There’s no expectations, as ever, and I hope you have a lovely week. Donate here

There is also now a Thoughts Too Loud Podcast!

It’s strange. It feels very strange that things have worked out the way they have.

Since I was a child I dreamt of being a writer. I was always nose-deep in books. I didn’t think it was possible, really. Full time thing, just being allowed to write as a job. And it does feel like something that requires permission. I never fully believed, even as I carved out some sort of literary career over the last ten years, that it would all come together.

There is faith involved, I think, when you set out to achieve a dream. Because there are no guarantees. No certainties. Just a maybe. There is just hope and perseverance. I don’t think talent and ability are anywhere near as important as determination. The drive to not back it all in.

But now after ten years of work, it feels like maybe some impossibility is happening. And this feeling has come every time an Indie publisher like Dark Thirty, or Sunday Mornings, or Broken Sleep have believed in my work enough to publish. I wouldn’t be here without that belief. Or the support of family, friends, strangers who support my work more than anyone else on the planet. I’ve felt very held throughout all of it.

And so it feels a fitting title for a book. Because I didn’t know, couldn’t know how things would work out. There are countless other versions of this where I didn’t start posting videos, where those videos weren’t received well, where it never became my turn to do it. Versions of me that didn’t fall out of full time employment, who never went viral, who didn’t get so lucky. It was a faith, a belief, that things might work out in the end.

So the title is as much a reminder to me as it is to you. A gentle reminder that, maybe, against all odds, things can work out. And I cannot wait to share the book with you all in April.

Not to be a gross loser, but you can pre-order it if you like, but there is no obligation. It’ll still be all hugs and good vibes if we meet: https://ebury.lnk.to/Maybethingsdoworkoutintheend
