This blog is a labour of love, and it will always be free. Over 1,000 people read every post which is incredible. And if just 100 people donate €2 it means that I’ll be able to continue doing all of this for another year. So if you like the work, it would mean the world to me if you considered making a donation. Thank you to everyone who already has this year. There’s no expectations, as ever, and I hope you have a lovely week. Donate here
There is also now a Thoughts Too Loud Podcast!
The internet can be unhinged. This is known.
Take for example how I posted on TikTok last week about how I noticed that popular songs on the platform were pushed to creators to use, strategically, in exchange for money (marketing, a classic) yet people took my video to mean I thought this was a problem, or even more bizarrely , suggested that I somehow hate female Irish artists because I used CMAT’s latest tune as an example. I only used this song, because on the list of song you could promote it was a) the only song I knew and b) no longer being promoted as the campaign had ended.
Lots of hate for such a benign observation. It’s almost as if if strangers on the internet go out of their way to misunderstand you (shock!). Remember the benefit of the doubt? I haven’t heard that name in years. But seriously though, we live in a world that encourages empathy, holding it up as the most important virtue, yet these same people cut strangers to ribbons in comment sections across the internet. The hypocrisy is real.
And I’ll hold my hands up and say, I don’t always think posts through, I don’t always get the wording right. I also enjoy some sass for the sake of a bit of craic. In the same video I referenced Assassin’s Creed – nothing is real, everything is permitted – and people took this to mean I was implying none of the hype around CMAT’s song was legit. Of course it bloody is, she’s an iconic popstar. To suggest she has no fans (myself amongst them) would be ridiculous.
But listen, I’ve been around the internet long enough to get my fair share of hate. It happens. And while I Was quite stressed and anxious on Friday, I’m ultimately grand. I was just shocked that hate would come for noticing that tech companies are manipulating their platform users for profit. To be honest, I thought we were against things like that. I suppose if I’d used an artist no one likes as an example it would have went down better. But as I said, CMAT was the only artist on the list I recognized. I’ll know better the next time.
The takeaway here is practice what you preach. If you’re all about that empathy life (it’s a good life) then it should extend to strangers, and strangers on the internet. You can’t claim to be a virtuous person if you’re being a prick to people online, y’know?
